Muskoka Pride will host a Trans Day of Remembrance community gathering at the Bracebridge Library on Nov. 20 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Shawn Forth, Secretary at Muskoka Pride, said the day recognizes the hundreds of trans people globally who were killed or murdered over the last year for being transgender.
“So people are being killed, murdered, and through suicide for no reason other than they are transgender. They’re facing transphobia. They are facing discrimination from people all through the world,” says Forth.
According to Forth, 281 trans people around the world are being memorialized this year, a figure that is likely underreported. Last year, he said the number was over 400.
Forth says attendees can expect a quiet space where people can feel safe, supported, and connected as part of the community.
“There will be a chance for people to gather and just be with other members of the community to get support on a day that’s a very challenging day for members of the trans community,” says Forth.
