Unique, $750,000 vehicle approved for Gravenhurst Fire Department

It will cost the Town of Gravenhurst $762,320, but it will give the town’s fire department a truck that only one other fire service in Ontario has.

Jared Cayley, fire chief for the Gravenhurst Fire Department, outlined in his April 16 report to council that City View Specialty Vehicles, based in Mississauga, Ont., will deliver the Rosenbauer Type III pumping apparatus. It will replace the pumper vehicle at the department’s station at 1622 Barkway Rd.

“When compared to the truck it is replacing, it can be seen as a vast improvement,” wrote Cayley.

The current pumper truck at the Barkway station was built in 2004 and is the oldest vehicle used by the fire department.

Cayley explained the new vehicle can fit more firefighters, be taken off-road, move while pumping foam, and has a sprinkler system underneath it.

Cayley said he expects the truck to be delivered in 19 months. He added fire trucks usually take close to two years to arrive.

“In a time where climate change implications are increasing and our population expands into our wildland-urban interface areas, a vehicle of this type can assist in responding to these new challenges and provide firefighters with the tools they need to do their jobs safely and effectively,” explained Cayley.

Council also approved purchasing a new plow and two hybrid half-ton pickup trucks during the recent council meeting.

The single axle plow will be delivered by Lewis Motor Sales Inc., based in Bracebridge, Ont., and will cost just over $400,500 while the pickup trucks will be purchased from Bourgeois Motors Inc., based in Midland, Ont., for just under $131,000.
