Rotary Club of Bracebridge bringing back car show

A former summer staple is returning to Bracebridge after it was cancelled last year.

The Rotary Club of Bracebridge will be hosting a car show on June 16 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the parking lot of the Rotary Centre for Youth at 131 Wellington St.

A shuttle service will take attendees from the Habitat for Humanity ReStore along Hwy. 118 W. every 15 to 20 minutes.

“There was a need,” says Darcy Hammond, Chair of the Rotary in the Community Committee.

He explains it will be admission by donation for those attending. For those wanting to display their cars, Hammond says it will cost $15 to register one car or $30 for two. However, he adds the registration fee comes with a complimentary breakfast the morning of the car show.

“It’s always nice to have a venue to go out and show off the fruits of your labour,” says Hammond. “You buy them, you restore them, you fix them out, then they sit in your garbage under a cover. It’s nice to take them out and show them off.”

Hammond grew up around classic cars. He says his father always had one that he was working on when he was growing up. It’s a tradition that he’s continued with his son.

For his son’s 16th birthday, he bought him a 1994 Eddie Bauer Ford Bronco and the pair fixed it up.

Hammond also has a 1986 Ford F150 replica, which is the car he drove when he was 16. “It was pretty fun to drive when I was a kid,” he remembers.

“I don’t like the terminology ‘classic,'” he jokes. “I find it’s dating myself. Maybe I’m a classic now.”

Hammond says he believes they can handle around 250 cars in the space they have.

“If I can have pull, I can only hope for good weather and a good crowd,” he finishes.
