District hoping collect tonnes of waste on Earth Day

Ahead of Earth Day on April 22, the District of Muskoka is encouraging the community to work together to pick up waste.

Renee Recoskie, director of waste management and environmental services for the district, says the Clean Muskoka Together is a year-round program that provides anyone interested with what they need to clean up their community, including gloves and garbage bags.

“Since its inception in 2022, we’ve collected nearly 2.5 tonnes of litter across the district,” says Recoskie.

She asks anyone looking to participate to sign up two weeks ahead of your intended cleanup day. Recoskie adds it’s free to join.

“It’s wonderful to see how much they’re finding and how many people are involved,” adds Recoskie about the district-wide program.

She also promoted the district’s recently changed green bin program which she says allows them to “expand green bin organics collection across Muskoka.”

Recoskie says the district is working to make compost available at the Rosewarne Landfill in Bracebridge and Beiers Landfill in Gravenhurst as a “thank you” for those who divert food, organic waste, leaf, and yard waste during the year.

She adds she is proud that the district is doing what it can to make it a little easier for people to support the environment.

“Everyone’s individual actions mean so much,” says Recoskie. “That’s the truth for Earth Day, that’s the truth for when we’re looking at climate action and other sustainable initiatives as well.”
