BRACEBRIDGE, ON – Cuts to Ontario’s legal aid are on the minds of local community members.
Yesterday, the Lake Country Community Legal Clinic hosted an event called “Justice Fest”.
According to Meghan MacDonald, who works at the clinic, the event included a rally outside of MPP Norm Miller’s office, food and other hands-on activities.
MacDonald says attendees also discussed the impact that legal aid cuts have on the community. She says they were hoping to build solidarity, and resist the cuts to all legal clinics and legal aid.
The reason for Justice Fest stemmed from the May announcement that the province was making “drastic cuts to Legal Aid Ontario.”
“These cuts have already impacted legal aid services, including those offered by community legal clinics. Further cuts have been announced for next year, as well as a review that could lead to the community legal clinic model disappearing altogether,” said MacDonald.
According to MacDonald, the clinic contacted Miller twice by email and got no response.
