Should pot be sold in Muskoka? Huntsville says yes, but the rest wait until 2019

While Huntsville has jumped on pot sales in Muskoka, other communities are waiting.

Last week, Huntsville council decided to allow for retail marijuana shops to open in the municipality, making it the first Muskoka community to decide either way. But, Muskoka’s five other municipalities appear to be holding off until the New Year before making any final decisions.

Bracebridge, Muskoka Lakes and Georgian Bay Township have all wrapped up their council meetings for 2018 without having any final discussion on the matter yet.

A survey released by Muskoka Lakes Township found over 60 per cent of locals were in support of local marijuana sales.

Lake of Bays Township will hold it’s final 2018 council meeting on Tuesday, and staff is suggesting the members wait a bit longer to get public input before deciding. The township opened an online survey in late November asking for local input on the matter. That survey is still available on the town website.

Gravenhurst council appears to be taking a similar stance as a deciding pot discussion isn’t on its last council agenda of 2018 either.

All Ontario municipalities have until January 22nd to opt-in or out of local pot sales. Communities that do opt-in will be provided with a cut of taxes collected from the sales.
