The House of Commons is mulling over a proposal from Tony Clement to help stop extremism in Canada. The Parry Sound-Muskoka MP’s private members legislation went through its first hour of debate in Ottawa last night. The legislation is called The Prevention of Radicalization through Foreign Funding Act, and would stop foreign money that is used to promote radicalization and extremism from coming into Canada.
Clement says the act does that by allowing the Minister of Foreign Affairs to create a list of countries that have been involved in extremist activities.
And, Clement says if those organizations do accept money, they’re looking at fines or possible jail time. Clement says a Senate report committee from a couple of years ago shows there has been 683 instances of terrorist financing in Canada between 2009 and 2015.
Clement says this legislation would fill a gap that exists in our system now.
Now that the legislation has gone through the first hour of debate, it will go through another debate period and then the house will vote on second reading to see if it goes any further. Clement says the Trudeau Liberals aren’t supporting the bill so far, and he hopes to change some minds during the second hour of debate, which will be in the coming weeks.
