Huntsville to lower flags to half-staff in honour of those affected by Alberta grass fire

The Town of Huntsville will lower flags at Town facilities to half-staff in honour of those affected by a grass fire incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, Alberta.

Four members of the Canadian Armed Forces died, and dozens of others were injured in the fire on Saturday. Prime Minister Mark Carney described the blaze as a “violent, fast-moving fire.”

Huntsville Mayor Nancy Alcock released a statement this morning, extending the community’s condolences to everyone affected by the tragedy.

“When a tragedy like this occurs, it touches all of us. Our hearts are with the families, friends, and communities in Alberta who are grieving such a devastating loss. It’s difficult to find words in the face of such heartbreak. On behalf of our community, I extend our condolences to everyone affected and wish them strength in the days ahead. There are moments when communities across the country pause together in sadness. This is one of those moments. Our thoughts are with everyone in Alberta who is facing loss and heartbreak,” said Alcock.
