Lake of Bays house fire results in $1.5 million in damages

A Lake of Bays residence was heavily damaged in a structure fire, resulting in an estimated $1.5 million in losses.

According to officials, Lake of Bays Fire Rescue responded to the fire on Owls Court on May 23 at approximately 2:50 p.m.

Firefighters from Station 20 in Port Cunnington, Station 30 in Hillside, and Station 40 in Baysville attended the scene with 25 personnel and seven apparatus. Additional assistance was provided by Algonquin Highlands fire crews from the Oxtongue and Dorset stations.

Officials said when crews arrived, visible fire and smoke were coming from the exterior of the home and spreading into the nearby bush line. Firefighters quickly worked to attack the blaze and prevent the wildfire from spreading further.

Officials said crews also deployed an exposure line to protect a nearby garage, limiting the damage to minor exterior heat damage.

Lake of Bays Fire Rescue was assisted at the scene by the Ontario Provincial Police, Muskoka EMS, and Hydro One.

No one was home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.

The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation.
