The Simcoe Muskoka Health Unit is highlighting the importance of oral health and promoting low-cost dental services as April 1 marks the start of Oral Health Month.
“Good oral health is an essential part of overall health and well-being at every stage of life,” said Shelley-Ann Morgan, manager of SMDHU’s community oral health program. “For children, healthy teeth and gums do more than create bright smiles; they support proper nutrition, speech development and self-confidence. Establishing positive dental habits early can prevent painful infections and reduce the need for more complex treatment later.”
According to officials, children should have their first dental visit by age one and continue with regular checkups. Early dental care supports proper tooth development, reduces the risk of future issues, and helps build a strong foundation for lifelong oral health.
Officials said there are low-cost and publicly funded programs offered by the health unit for those families worried about the cost of dental care. Eligible children and youth up to age 17 can access a range of services through these programs, including routine dental checkups and urgent emergency care.
“Our clinics provide a welcoming and respectful environment where children and families are treated with compassion and care,” said Morgan. “We encourage families to check their eligibility with us, as many are pleasantly surprised to discover they qualify.”
Additionally, health officials said dental clinics at the health unit also provide dental care to eligible adults through the Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program.
Appointments are available at SMDHU clinic locations in Barrie and Gravenhurst. For more information or to schedule an appointment by phone, call 705-721-7520 ext. 8818, or book online.
