Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare preparing for annual increase in respiratory illnesses

Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (MAHC) is preparing for the annual increase in respiratory illnesses and reminding residents of the important role everyone plays in helping protect the community.

According to health officials, the winter months typically bring increases in influenza, COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and other respiratory viruses, which can put additional pressure on hospitals and the healthcare system.

“Our teams carefully plan each year for respiratory illness season to ensure we are ready to meet increased demand while continuing to provide safe, compassionate care,” said Cheryl Harrison, President and CEO.

Officials said community members can help prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses by staying home when feeling unwell, keeping vaccinations up to date, washing their hands frequently, and covering coughs and sneezes.

Hospital visitors are also encouraged to follow infection prevention and control measures to help protect staff, physicians and volunteers.

Officials said MAHC will continue to monitor respiratory illness activity locally and across the region and may adjust measures such as masking requirements, visitor guidance and outbreak protocols as needed to protect vulnerable patients.
