Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department responded to two wildland fires last week

The Huntsville/Lake of Bays fire department responded to two separate wildland fires in the area last week.

Fire officials say the first wildland fire, which covered two acres, occurred on Oct. 14 on Stephenson Road 2.

Fire crews worked alongside Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry crews on the first day and then continued suppression and overhaul efforts on their own for the next two days.

The fire was extinguished, and no structures were threatened.

The second fire, which officials say occurred off Limberlost Road on Oct. 17, covered approximately 19 acres in a remote forested area.

Crews from Huntsville and Lake of Bays worked for three days to bring the fire under control.

“While both fires are now fully extinguished, they serve as a good reminder that wildland fires can still occur well into the fall,” said Steve Markham, Fire Prevention Officer. “Even when temperatures are cooler, dry leaves and vegetation can ignite easily under the right conditions.”
