Blue-green algae bloom found in Brandy Lake southeast of Port Carling

Blue-green algae bloom conditions are likely present within Brandy Lake southeast of Port Carling, according to officials with the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks.

Officials said these algae can produce toxins that may pose health risks to people and pets. Conditions on the water can change quickly; blooms may appear, move, or dissipate with wind and weather.

The Township advises the public to avoid contact with visibly affected water, keep children and pets away, and refrain from using the lake water for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, or filling pools and spas.

Anyone who develops symptoms after being exposed to the affected water is asked to contact their healthcare provider. Symptoms can include skin, eye, or throat irritation, fever, abdominal pain, and more.

While blue-green algae blooms may not always show the presence of toxins, there is always the risk that toxins could be produced. Officials say toxins can stay in the water for up to three weeks after the bloom is gone.
