The wildfire north of Beiers Road in Gravenhurst has been put out, following an extensive effort by fire crews since Monday (Oct. 6) afternoon.
Fire crews said they were back on scene on Oct. 9 to complete overhaul operations.
Fire officials said the area was thoroughly monitored from the air using a drone with a thermal-imaging camera, and that ground crews used similar technology.
According to firefighters, the blaze was contained Monday night and, over the following days, they dealt only with multiple hot spots.
The 3.25-hectare fire, located approximately 400 meters north of 1436 Beiers Road, was initially reported by a neighbour around 1:45 p.m. Monday. Due to the heavily wooded area, firefighters have had to battle the flames on foot without ATVs, resulting in an arduous process.
On Oct. 6, firefighters from Ramara and Severn townships joined the scene, followed by the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR).
The MNR provided two water bombers that made eight drops using water from nearby Morrison Lake.
Firefighters from Muskoka Lakes and Bracebridge assisted on Oct. 7 and 8. The effort was further supported by crews from Huntsville/Lake of Bays, Bracebridge, Muskoka Lakes, and Georgian Bay.
“We’ve had terrific support throughout this incident, and I want to commend everyone involved,” Deputy Chief Clapp said.
