UPDATE: Bracebridge OPP investigating social media videos depicting unlawful firearm use

Bracebridge OPP is actively investigating recent social media videos that show individuals discharging firearms in a careless and unsafe manner.

Police are encouraging anyone with information to come forward.

According to the OPP, the careless use of firearms, including firing weapons without proper regard for safety or surroundings, is a serious criminal offence.

Police say actions that place others at risk or result in damage to property can lead to charges under the Criminal Code of Canada, including but not limited to careless use of a firearm, mischief or destruction of property, and unauthorized possession or discharge of a firearm.

According to police, individuals found engaging in this behaviour may face criminal charges, firearm seizure, and potential imprisonment.

An investigation is ongoing.

Parry Sound-Muskoka MPP Graydon Smith released a statement online on Aug. 28 regarding the matter. He voiced his support for OPP’s investigation and their efforts to hold the individuals accountable, stating that “this reckless behaviour threatens public safety and will not be tolerated.”

“The vast majority of firearms owners are responsible, law-abiding citizens who follow the rules and respect their communities,” said Smith. “Regrettably, the actions of the individuals involved do a disservice to the thousands of responsible gun owners across Parry Sound–Muskoka.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Bracebridge OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
