Task force created to guide implementation of Municipal Accommodation Tax in Lake of Bays

The Township of Lake of Bays approved the formation of the Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) Task Force at a meeting on May 13.

The MAT is a program that has been adopted by municipalities throughout Ontario and Canada as a way to generate funds to strengthen local tourism.

In Lake of Bays, an additional tax will be charged to visitors staying in short-term rentals.

“The new Task Force includes members of Council, Township staff, tourism organizations, and representatives from both large and small accommodation businesses,” states a release from the Township.

Officials say the Task Force will begin meeting in June and continue through the summer with a focus on developing recommendations on how to use funds generated by the Municipal Accommodation Tax and which tourism partnerships the program will support.

“As the MAT program develops, the Township will provide more opportunities for public input,” Town officials say.
