Health unit giving tips for start of tick season

As spring begins, our health unit has a few tips on keeping yourself safe from ticks.

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit says blacklegged ticks can carry Lyme disease, which causes fever, chills, fatigue, and rash, as well as head, muscle, and joint aches.

Officials advise staying on the trails when outside, and using bug spray containing DEET or Icaridin. They also recommend light-coloured, long-sleeved clothing and closed shoes, as well as tucking your pants into your socks.

When you get back from a day outdoors, the health unit says to do a full-body check for ticks on yourself, your family, and any pets. Officials add removing a tick within 24 hours can prevent infection, and taking a shower within two hours of being outside can remove loose ticks before they bite.
