Huntsville’s Chrysalis gets funding boost from the province

The Muskoka Women’s Advocacy Group is going to be able to make some upgrades to Chrysalis in Huntsville after receiving provincial funding. The $22,600 investment was announced today by Ontario’s Minister of Community and Social Services, Dr. Helena Jaczek. This is part of a bigger project to invest around $4.1 million into 58 women’s shelters across the province.

Executive Director of the Muskoka Women’s Advocacy Group, Rachelle Walker, says the money is going to go into extending the fenced yard, installing better light fixtures inside, and adding access door buttons for the accessible bedroom and bathroom.

Jaczek says a shelter is often the first step for women who have experienced violence, and this funding will help Chrysalis make investments so women and their kids have access to a safer, more secure, and accessible shelter.

Muskoka Women’s Advocacy Group also runs the Muskoka Interval House in Bracebridge, and Walker says funding is needed to do some upgrades there as well, like buying a new furnace and fixing a flood issue. She says the grant is a yearly application, and they will be applying for another investment next year.

More details on both shelters and other support for domestic violence victims is on the MWAG website.
