Eating healthy is difficult for some in Muskoka

MUSKOKA, ON-The price of eating healthier in Muskoka continues to rise.

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) reveals that the annual Nutritious Food Basket survey shows that the cost of feeding a family of four has risen eight percent in the last year.

In its survey it shows that one in eight thousand homes, roughly 70,000 people, do no have enough income to support a basic healthy diet and that about 1,500 children go to school or bed hungry, often daily.

The survey measured how much people make, against rent, transportation, utilities and other necessities and found that a single adult in Ontario spends 139 percent of their income on food and rent.

According to the SMDHU, a family of four spends about 89 percent of their income on food and rent and that little or no money is available to spend on other expenses like internet, clothes, school supplies and child care.
