Bala’s Trek to Bethlehem

BALA, ON-The Christmas season is almost upon us and a group in Bala is bringing to life one of the Bible’s famous stories.

On December 7th, the crew behind Trek to Bethlehem will be hosting their annual event at the community centre.

The trek reenacts the famous tale of the birth of Jesus in his manger. On the journey, participants will meet a variety of characters. In an interview with the MyMuskokaNow.ca newsroom, Pat Gidley, one of the organizers of the event, said that they have characters ranging from grumpy Roman soldiers to farm animals, a travelling family and magi who are following the star.

“We brought in actually animals from farms to take part, they have travelled a long way for this,” said Gidley.

The doors to the event open at 5:30 p.m., participants will enjoy singing carols inside the community centre. Starting at 6:00 p.m., according to Gidley, groups of 18 will periodically and be guided through the experience.

Gidley recommends that parents with young children come earlier than those do not. According to Gidley, the event will not end until everyone has had a chance to go through.

The event has been ongoing since 1993 and it is free for anyone who wants to go in. Gidley does ask that if you are going to attend, consider donating to the hard-working men and women who pull off this event because that is how they are able to pay for it.

The event is an outside walk and Gidley encourages participants to dress for the occasion.
