Trudeau to thank flood fighters personally in Bracebridge Wednesday

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is stopping by Bracebridge Wednesday evening to thank those who helped battle floods in the area.

Trudeau already planned on attending the Parry Sound-Muskoka Liberal nomination meeting where  Trisha Cowie will be acclaimed as the riding’s Liberal candidate.

Mayor Graydon Smith said he hoped the Prime Minister would stop by Bracebridge but wasn’t sure it was in the cards until a few days ago.

“With busy schedules for world leaders you don’t necessarily expect them to pop in,” Smith said. “Over the last couple of days, their team worked with ours to put something together. It’s always interesting to have a leader of a country come by. I guess it doesn’t happen very often.”

The mayor added he is very pleased to have the opportunity to introduced Trudeau and thank the federal government for the help they provided during the State of Emergency.  He added it isn’t a public event and expected it to be a small gathering with just a few volunteers and others who helped.

“It won’t be a long time but an opportunity to shake some hands,” Smith said. “It will be a chance for me to introduce him to some of the people who worked so hard over the last couple of weeks to keep the community safe.”

The mayor expected Trudeau to arrive around 5:30 pm before going to meet with Cowie in Huntsville at 7:15 pm.
