OPP release distracted driving campaign numbers

The OPP has released the distracted driving campaign numbers for the Muskoka area.

The March Break saw police focus on drivers not paying attention across the province, specifically looking for those using handheld devices.

In Bracebridge, 21 people were charged with using a hand-held device.

About half that number were charged in Huntsville with 10 drivers hit with a fine for using their phone while driving. There was also a charge for a screen being visible to a driver and one careless driving charge.

The new distracted driving penalties can be as high as $1000 and three demerit points for a first offence.

Provincially, from March 11th to 17th, over 1,500 drivers received distracted driving charges with another 51 getting hit with a distraction-related careless driving fine. This is laid when a driver is caught dividing their attention between driving and something else that made the roads unsafe.
