Muskoka Lakes Mayor urging snowmobilers to obey trail rules

A rare social media post from Muskoka Lakes Mayor Phil Harding is gaining attention.

The message relates to problems on one of the area snowmobile trails that has been closed as the result of riders not adhering to the rules.

“In Port Carling, we lost the C102D trail, the only major trail through town because people ignored this sign,” writes Harding in the post from Wednesday. “They saw the lake and said ‘let’s go’.”

He continues, indicating the local snowmobile club is trying to resolve the issue.

“I know the club is working with the landowner, trying to find a solution,” writes Harding. “The real solution is simple – obey the rules “STAY ON THE TRAIL.”

A large percentage of snowmobile trails require permission from private landowners to create a  continuity of trip for riders. When snowmobilers lose that crucial link it can result in many kilometres of dead-end trails.
