Algonquin Park Hosting Winter Festival this weekend

Ontario’s public summer destination is reminding folks to come and have some fun with your family in the winter.

With the Family Day weekend just days away, parents might be looking to keep their kids entertained. If you are willing to go for a drive, Algonquin Park might be the place to go.

Starting on Saturday is Algonquin Park’s Winter in the Wild Festival, which park staff say “celebrates winter in Algonquin Park through indoor and outdoor events.”

According to the Park, the festival is at a variety of locations along the Highway 60 corridor. They say that a lot of the activities will be at the visitor’s centre.

The Saturday of the festival kicks off with a ” guided winter bird walk” which as the same says is a guided tour to find birds specific to the park including the Canada Jay, the Spruce Goose, and the Boreal Chickadee. that starts at 10:00am and goes to 11:30am.

Next on the schedule for the festival is a book signing with Micheal Runtz, the author of Algonquin Wild. The signing goes from 10:00am to 3:00pm. Also happening during the same time is “meet the artist” where attendees can meet and interact with the artists from the brown baggers.

Back outside is a wildlife snowshoe excursion, this event is exactly how it sounds, people snowshoe around the park experiencing the park in the winter. Snowshoe enthusiasts are asked to meet at the visitor centre before 10:30am to join the park naturalist on the trek.

Another outdoor activity will have folks learning winter camping do’s and do not’s with Duane and Hailey Sonntag. That event will be at the visitor centre from 11:00am to 12:00 noon.

Other events planned for the day include a taxidermist representation of Algonquin animals, a presentation on how bears handle hibernation, a second guided bird walk and snowshoe excursion, ice skating, campfires, and a fireside night time chat.
