Clearing roof of snow vital to avoid damage

With the snowfall and recent freeze-thaw weather we have had, many in Muskoka are looking at their roofs.

As snow piles up on homes, a point comes when clearing the roof of snow becomes a concern.

Information online suggests every 15 cm of snowfall homeowners should rake their roofs to remove the potential excess weight.

Failure to do so could result in ice dams on the eavestroughs and downspouts, eventually expanding and damaging your roof tiles. Get some wet weather as we did earlier in the week and the snow soaks up the water and nearly quadruples in weight resulting in big problems.

A lot of people leave it to much higher than that, and that is when the experts get called in.

Removing between two and three metres of snow is not a job that you just run up the ladder and tackle. It is physically demanding and with icy, pitched roofs, very dangerous.

Services typically run around $50 per hour. And don’t forget, all that snow up on the roof ends up on your driveway and sidewalk, so you have to pay to get that removed or be on standby to run a snowblower through the deep piles.
