Other tips include:
- Make sure to stay in the kitchen when you’re cooking. It’s important to keep a close eye on the turkey to reduce any chance of it burning and potentially catching on fire
- Clear the cooking area. The three feet around the stove should remain a kid- and pet-free zone.
- Once the prep work is complete, make sure to store away sharp objects like knives, electrical cords etc. so that they’re not in harm’s way.
- Never leave children alone in a room with a lit candle.
- Keep floors clean and free of clutter. Make sure toys, bags and other loose items are stored away so that you don’t trip over anything.
- Matches and utility lighters should be kept out of the reach of children. Consider storing it on high shelves tucked away.
- Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Test them by pushing the test button.
