Muskoka officials asked to consider opening roads to auto driving vehicles

Muskoka could become part of a new testing route for autonomous vehicles.

The Ontario Good Roads Association wants to create a test route stretching from Windsor to Ottawa and utilizing smaller municipal roads. The OGRA believes a verified route would attract more companies developing auto driving vehicle technology to the province.

The organization is looking for support from Muskoka’s municipalities. It’s asking for officials in each of the communities to suggest a list of municipal roads which would be appropriate for autonomous vehicle testing. Officials would prefer to use municipal roads over highways to test how AVs interact with human traffic and cyclists.

The organization suggests the test route could open new socio-economic benefits for the municipalities that agree to get involved.
