School Board clears the air over curriculum

The Trillium Lakelands District School Board penned an open letter to parents today.

The letter addresses the speculation over what will happen with the Health and Physical Education curriculum, in particular, the Sex-Ed portion of the curriculum. In the letter, Larry Hope the Director of education for TLDSB says that gender identity, acceptance of members of the LGBTQ community, consent, and overall sexual health should be taught in schools and in homes. And they would be sure to respect the instruction of the provincial government while taking steps to be involved when the review of the sex-ed curriculum takes place.

TLDSB believes that internet safety should be included in the curriculum.

In the letter, the board says that like other school boards, they continue to struggle with standardized math assessments, saying that external assessments are a snapshot of student achievement. TLDSB says that they will continue to place confidence in teachers within the district to address the math skills of the study body.

The letter closes with the acknowledgement that TLDSB will continue to grow their indigenous studies within the schools.
