The Trillium Lakelands District School Board is seeing positive results in Grade 9 math. EQAO results show 56 per cent of students met or exceeded the provincial standard in applied math and almost 90 per cent in academic, both above the provincial average. However, as math continues to be a major struggle province-wide in the elementary school level, Director of Education Larry Hope says there’s no real answer as to why there’s a gap between Grade 6 math scores and Grade 9.

BMLSS exceed both the board and provincial average in applied and academic math. Huntsville High School is slightly below the board average in applied math, but made it above the 47 per cent provincial average. In academic math, they met the 85 per cent provincial average. Meantime in literacy, Hope says schools did well in the OSSLT as well.

Although these are good stats, Hope says there is gender gap in both literacy and math. He says girls continue to outperform the boys. Hope says their are focusing on this gap by reviewing the interests of boys, investing in reading specific to boys, and helping boys make connections between learning math and future job possibilities.
