MTO- OPP Targeting truck safety in province

With memories of the horrible inferno on Highway 400 that took place last November near Barrie, coupled with a 25% increase in highway fatalities involving commercial trucks over the first six months of the year, the OPP and Ministry of Transportation are launching Operation Corridor through the Eastern and Central Ontario regions over the next few days.

They will be concentrating on both moving violations involving inattentive behaviour and also checkpoints where vehicles, loads and paperwork will all be inspected to make sure the province’s strict standards when it comes to safety are being adhered to.

Since the start of the year, the OPP have attended over 3,000 collisions involving commercial trucks and there have been 25 deaths in that time.

Brad Blair, OPP Deputy Commissioner of Traffic Safety says his force is not out to get the trucking community, and he “commends the many transport drivers who are committed to safe driving and other motorists who respect their space on the road and help keep Ontario roads safe.”
