Sand bags available for Gravenhurst residents concerned about rising water levels

If you’re seeing water rising around your home or cottage, you can get sand or sandbags from the Town of Gravenhurst. The town is making the resource available for residents who are worried about the continuing rain and melting snow. A recent report from Public Works indicates Severn River Road West is flooded from 1123 to the end of the road, between four and eight inches deep. The town says it is monitoring the situation and will release more information as it becomes available.
The two locations to pick up sand in Gravenhurst are:
  • Severn River Road E (cul-de-sac)  -1022 East Severn River Road (turnaround)
  • Cowbell Lane – 1102 Cowbell Lane (turnaround)

There are no specific warnings issues for Muskoka, however the district is under a provincial flood watch which will provide up-to-date information on the potential for flooding. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says stream levels are moderately elevated, and the latest snow survey in central Ontario showed there is still the equivalent of 80 to 200mm of water. The MNRF says the forecasted rain today and tomorrow, combined with the melting snow, has the potential to cause localized flooding in south central Ontario, where the streams are already high.

The MNRF is recommending the community keeps a close watch on forecasts, conditions, river flows and ice-jam prone areas as well.

The MNRF’s provincial flood watch for Muskoka, as of April 25th.
