Firefighter recruitment coming up in Huntsville

The Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department is launching its 2018 recruitment campaign next month. The department is looking for part-time firefighters to join the team and help to make a difference in the community.

The fire department has six stations throughout Lake of Bays, as well as in Port Sydney and Huntsville. Fire crews will respond to fires, medical emergencies, hazardous materials, rescues and other emergencies. Potential firefighters must be physically and mentally prepared to respond to those emergencies, and life-threatening situations according to the department.

In order to make it on the team, candidates have to pass Stage I and II of the Ontario Fire Administration Candidate Fire Testing Services. You’ll be tested on your reading abilities, mathematical reasoning, map reading, interpersonal skills and others during Stage I. In Stage II candidates do a medical screening, and will be tested physically. Some of the testing includes a 60-second sit-up test, aerobic fitness evaluations, and trunk flexibility tests.

The fire department says it will provide training on practical firefighting skills.

Online applications will be accepted from May 1st to June 1st on the Town of Huntsville website, and there will be a free information night on May 31st at 7:00pm, at Station #1 – 1 Payne Drive, Huntsville.
