The OPP needs your help to keep Muskoka’s roads safe. The police and the district are hosting another public forum on the 2018 Safe Roads Campaign in Huntsville on Thursday night. The public forum aims to hear from drivers, cyclists, pedestrians and off-road enthusiasts about current issues on the roads and to brainstorm solutions.
Huntsville OPP Detachment Commander John Graham says the OPP wants to work with the largest stakeholders in this issue, which is the commuters and people affected by the issues on roads, highways, waterways, and trails.
He says it will also include community members and will work on looking at initiatives to make Muskoka’s roads the safest to drive in Ontario or even Canada. Graham says they are looking at what they can do for “quick wins” as well as long-term sustainability, and the public and the police need to work together to make that happen.
Some ideas already proposed include red-light cameras and widening shoulders for cyclists and pedestrians. In 2017 there were over 1,200 crashes in the district, nine of which were fatal. The underlying theme of those collisions was driver behavior, according to Graham.
