The plan for a resort village at Deerhurst gets approval from Huntsville council

Huntsville council has approved the plan for the proposed Deerhurst Resort Village. Mayor Claude Doughty says it’s a step in the right direction for our economic and cultural development.

The Penn Lake Association has been working with the Town and Skyline over concerns about the environmental impact of this new development. President Rob Hurst says the association’s objective was to try to get things that they thought were important to protect and preserve.

The proposed dock has also been removed from the plan and Skyline decided to move the two westerly buildings be pushed back from the canal with at least a 30 metre buffer. The approval was great news for Deerhurst General Manager Chris Lund. Lund says this new development will help alleviate challenges they currently have with seasonality.

The proposed village centre will have 640 units of tourist commercial accommodation, resort residential units and limited retail commercial space. The vote to approve the plan was not a unanimous decision. Councillors Karin Terziano and John Davis voted against it. The application will now go before district council for approval, which Mayor Doughty says will likely happen.
