SMCDSB continues to see a decline in math EQAO scores

Math continues to be the concern with school in the Simcoe-Muskoka District School Board. EQAO results were recently released showing not only a drop in math province-wide, but also within our own schools. Communications and Public Affairs liaison Pauline Stevenson says the struggle is with the problem solving aspects of math.

Stevenson says you can’t really compare schools and boards to get a complete picture. The EQAO results are meant to illustrate a trend over time.

The school board currently has programs in place to see what they can do to improve that grade.

In Huntsville St. Mary’s saw a drastic decline in math. In Grade 3, the school dropped from just over 70 per cent of students achieving the provincial standard in the 2012-2013 school year to 40 per cent last year. That’s almost 30 per cent less than the provincial average. The Grades 6 saw a slight increase from 36 to 38 per cent, but that is still 15 per cent less than the provincial average.

Monsignor Michael O’Leary’s Grade 3 results saw a slight decrease from 83 per cent of students achieving the provincial standard in 2012-2013 to 78 last year. The school still beat the 67 per cent provincial average. The Grade 6 results on the other hand were less that stellar. Math dropped to 39 per cent last year from the 62 per cent in 2012-2013.

Although math results were less than ideal, reading and writing is a different story. Stevenson says they are seeing positive results. In Grade 3 and 6 writing almost 80 per cent of students are achieving at or above the provincial standard. There was a three per cent improvement in Grade 6 reading and a one per cent improvement for Grade 3.
