Local sexual assault expert: Being clear about the experience of women is an important step

A shift in society’s collective thinking is making it easier for victims of sexual assault to come forward. That’s one thought from the Executive Director of the Muskoka/Parry Sound Coordinated Sexual Assault Services, Lauren Power. She says more and more women are unafraid to speak out about the experiences they have had.

Power says for a long time, women were shamed and silenced, and society as a whole tended to blame women when these experiences happen to them.

Power says men as allies to the movement are also acknowledging their role in creating change as well.

When it comes to the recent political shake ups, including sexual misconduct allegations against Ontario’s former Conservative party leader Patrick Brown, Power says the political realm hasn’t been an easy one for women.

Power says she thinks many people, men and women, are hoping for change.
