Muskoka Women’s March happening in Huntsville this weekend

Fighting back against injustice and finding a solution as a community. That’s the goal March Director Michelle Emson has for Saturday’s Muskoka Women’s March. The event is part of a global initiative to bring awareness to the inequality and issues women still face in today’s society.

Emson says these are real issues, not only around the world but also right here at home. This weekend marks the one-year anniversary of the Women’s March on Washington, which aimed to spread the message that women’s rights are human rights.

Emson says social media movements, like Time’s Up and #MeToo, are bringing the issue to the forefront of everyday conversation.

As an openly out transgendered woman and an international human’s rights activist, Emson says she is very much aware of these issues.

Emson says there are many women in Muskoka doing incredible work to support local women and families, which motivated her to get the march underway. Saturday’s event is family friendly, which Emson says is an important aspect.

Emson says the march also aims to empower women and spread the message of “you’re not alone”.

She says the community has already shown its support; Mayor Scott Aitchison, Muskoka-Parry Sound Sexual Assault Services, and representatives from the District of Muskoka will all be in attendance. Emson says the support is gathering, and notes in less than 48 hours more than 10,000 people have been reached with the campaign.

If you want to join the Muskoka Women’s March, it starts at the Huntsville Place Mall at 10:30am. At 11:00am the march will begin, it will go to River Mill Park, do the loop, and then go back to the mall. Emson says wear pink if you want, and you can keep track of the event on its Facebook page.
