Gravenhurst to raise Crime Stoppers flag this week

Gravenhurst is throwing its support behind a civilian organization that helps to solve local crimes. The municipality is holding a Crime Stoppers flag raising ceremony on Tuesday morning, to recognize the importance of the organization. January is Crime Stoppers month, which aims to raise awareness about the non-profit. Anonymous tips about various crimes can be called in to Crime Stoppers which are then relayed onto police, and if your tip helps to solve a crime you could be eligible for a cash reward.

Crime Stoppers Simcoe Dufferin Muskoka Police Coordinator Leslie Woodley says community engagement is really important, because it’s where all of the tips come from. She says Crime Stoppers has a lot of success with people calling in.

Woodley says all tips from the public are helpful.

In 2017, Crime Stoppers received over 2,300 tips, helped to make 281 arrests, gave out more than $28,000 in rewards cash, and helped to recover over $5.5 million in drugs.

Tomorrow’s flag raising in Gravenhurst is happening at the municipal office on Pineridge Gate at 10:30am.

Number of arrests made due to Crime Stoppers tips jumped by almost 100 between 2016 and 2017
