Police warn winter travel advisories should be taken seriously in Muskoka

When winter weather hits, it’s best to stay off the road.

On Tuesday, Environment Canada sent out a winter travel advisory for Muskoka as driving conditions turned dangerous during an afternoon snowstorm. Bracebridge OPP reports officers were called out to 18 collisions during the day. Ten of those crashes were on Highway 11 and no one was seriously injured.

Constable Mo Tilson says when a travel advisory is put out, it’s best to just stay where you are.

Tilson says if you do have to travel or you get caught driving during a storm, make sure to drive slow, stay away from other vehicles on the road and always turn on your headlights. She says if you crash your vehicle during a storm you should stay inside until help arrives.

Tilson says it’s best to be prepared for an emergency like this by keeping a kit in your vehicle with candles, a blanket, food, and water.
