Gravenhurst Fire Department welcomes new recruits

The Gravenhurst Fire Department is getting a little bit bigger. Nine recruits were welcomed to the team last night, after finishing a year-long training program. The recruits exchanged their yellow helmets to black ones that regular firefighters wear. It’s tradition for the recruits to get their helmets along with their graduation diplomas.

Last night’s ceremony also celebrated several promotions. The newly promoted officers were presented and pinned with their new badges by their wives. Captain Chris Tryon’s retirement was also celebrated after 19 years of service. He was presented with his helmet and a plaque by Deputy Chief Todd Clapp. Deputy Mayor Jeff Watson spoke at the ceremony, bringing attention to the importance of family support to the fire department. Town CAO Glen Davies also encouraged the new recruits to rely on one another, to remain ready for service, and to reach out to one another for strength.
