Don’t use the water from Peninsula Lake in Huntsville

There could be dangerous toxins in a lake in Huntsville.

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is warning residents not to use the water from Peninsula Lake for cooking or bathing. The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change is testing the water for blue-green algae. The toxins from this bloom can cause serious health issues if they are swallowed. Officials say water treatment or boiling will not destroy these toxins.

Residents on the lake should also stay out of the water if you see algae nearby. The algae blooms can turn the water a blue-green or pea-soup colour.

The MyMuskokaNow newsroom will provide more details as they become available.
