Moosekokie will likely be spending the winter in Huntsville

Moosekokie is here to stay, at least for now. Huntsville councillors voted to allow the sculpture at River Mill Park to stay in its spot at the old bandshell until the spring at its last committee meeting.

Moosekokie, which is of a moose sitting in a Muskoka chair with a flag and a cooler, was originally meant to be uninstalled in October. However, council agreed to let it stay for the winter to see if it holds up in the weather and if it will cost any money to do repairs if it stays there indefinitely.

Huntsville’s Manager of Arts, Culture and Heritage Teri Souter says staff has noted people sit there a lot and it’s a popular photo opportunity. She also says the artist wants to see it stay in the park over the winter to look at how it holds up, as its the first one he’s created.

Council will still have to vote on the decision at the next council meeting, and if it passes the issue will be revisited at the end of May. At that time, the town can decide if wants to accept the piece in its permanent collection or uninstall it, which will be at the artist’s expense.
