Oxtongue Lake for Arts and Culture celebrating local artists and Group of Seven this month

A September arts festival is helping to bring Group of Seven fans to the area. The Oxtongue Lake for Arts and Culture is hosting its second Artists’ Day Festival on September 23rd.

Co-Chair Chris Woods says the day features 20 local artists, from painters to sculptures to photographers. There is also going to be various presentations throughout the day. Woods says one is from Phil “The Forecaster” Chadwick, who looks at Tom Thomson paintings and the weather patterns in them. A trailer from a new documentary based on the area will be shown, and TT Last Spring will present on Thomson’s final days in Algonquin Park.

Woods says this is the second time for the festival, which was also put on in 2014. This year’s event is to celebrate the connection between Oxtongue Lake and the Group of Seven, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Thomson’s death, and to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. He says the money raised will go into promoting the significance of the area and to bring tourists in.

Woods says a painting by one of the Group of Seven members will be auctioned off during the event.

He says Casson painted more than 30 paintings of Oxtongue Lake and the area, and this print was donated by Casson’s daughter.

The walk is being done in conjuction with Hike Haliburton, and although this year’s walk is fully booked Woods says it’s something the organization does every year. The Artists’ Day Festival runs from 11:00am to 4:00pm, it’s a $5 entry free but children under 12 and seniors get in free. It’s running at the Oxtongue Lake Community Centre, which is at 3979 Highway 60.
