Muskoka turtle experts ask drivers to be vigilant amid provincial turtle crisis

A turtle crisis in Ontario is pushing a local recuse group into action.

Saving Turtles at Risk Today is asking drivers to be extra vigilant for these shelled reptiles on the roads in Muskoka.

This follows a call for a state of emergency for turtles in the province from the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre which is tending to nearly 600 injured turtles.

SAVE Project Coordinator Kelsey Crawford says this is likely happening because the wet weather has extended the egg-laying season for the turtles.

Crawford says helping save a turtle that has found its way onto the road is simple.

Snapping turtles can be a bit trickier, but Crawford suggests grabbing them between the hind legs and the tail in the same burger grip.

She says if you find a turtle that has been injured you should call the conservation centre right away.

The conservation centre also reports the number of turtles killed on Ontario roads has doubled since last year.
