Ontario is encouraging families to “tackle the great outdoors”. The province is again having its annual free fishing week, which runs from July 1st to 9th. Everyone can drop in a line without a license, so long as you stay within the fishing limits. Ontario’s Minister of Natural Resources Kathryn McGarry says fishing is a great way for families and friends to get outside and spend time together, and the free week gives everyone the opportunity to try it out.
A number of lakes in Huntsville and Bracebridge are open for fishing during the free week. That includes Arrowhead Lake, Chub Lake and Stoneleigh Lake. Use the Fish On-Line tool to find a lake closest to you.
There are also a few events happening around Muskoka during Free Family Fishing Week. There is a fishing derby in Huntsville at Deer Lake RV Resort on July 1st and 2nd. There will be fishing on the 1st from 6:00am-6:00pm. It continues with prizes, games and lunch on the 2nd from 11:00am-4:00pm. Registration required by June 29th.
Algonquin Park is hosting a family fishing day at Whitefish Lake on July 8th. You can learn fishing, cleaning, and cooking techniques. There will also be lunch, prize draws, and a Park Helper Children’s Program clean-up. Fishing gear is available on loan.
