Discussions heat up over sidewalk costs at Bracebridge council

The question of who should pay for a sidewalk turned into a lively discussion at council.

During the last council meeting of the season, Bracebridge councillors spoke their opinions on pros and cons of the town taking on a portion of the cost of a sidewalk development on Cedar Lane.

The sidewalk would connect a proposed gas station development with the existing sidewalk on Taylor Road.

Councillor Don Smith says he feels the town paying 50 per cent of the cost would set a precedent for future developments.

Councillor Rick Maloney says the town had been planning on putting sidewalks in anyways in the near future.

He adds the 50 per cent of the cost charged to the developer will cover the portion of the sidewalk which will be in front of their store.

Council ended up voting 6 for and 3 against the town paying the 50 per cent of the cost.
