MNR meeting in Bracebridge Monday to discuss flood preparation

Local municipalities of Muskoka are meeting with the MNR Monday in Bracebridge to discuss flood concerns. Spokesperson for the MNR, Jolanta Kowalski says officials are gathering to discuss the status and expectations for emergency preparedness and response activities should flooding exist this spring. She adds, while it’s difficult to predict if flooding will occur, the snowfall amount this year has been higher than the historical average. If we get an extreme weather event with significant rainfall and/or high double-digit air temperature the snow pack could disappear quickly leading to an increased risk or flooding. Environment Canada says a special weather statement for Muskoka and Parry Sound is in effect. 15 to 25 mm of rain is expected today with temperatures being in the pluses all week. Officials will meet at the Rotary Centre for Youth at 12:30pm on Monday. Kowalski says the meeting is closed to media and the public.
