Teens encouraged to speak with public health nurses about sexual safety

Teens wanting to know more about sexual health have the option to see a public health nurse at school. The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit offers Sexual Health Services at all public high schools in Muskoka. Public Health Nurse Karla Stewart says it’s really important for teens to have solid sexual health information so they can make informed choices.

Stewart says they offer more than just testing.

They also offer sexuality counselling, whether it’s about sexual orientation and gender identity or referrals for sexual assault and abuse. Meantime, if you’re a student and are not sure if you should talk to a public health nurse or you feel embarrassed, Stewart encourages you to give it a try.

Stewart visits Huntsville High and BMLSS weekly and a second public health nurse is in Gravenhurst. Stewart says this service is completely confidential and students shouldn’t worry about their privacy when getting a hold of them.

Students can also put a note in a locked box at Student Services. They can call the Sexual Health Phone Line at 1-877-721-7520 ex. 8376 or their nurse’s work extension.
