A former Huntsville mayor says a by-election could cost $57,000

Huntsville council is going to vote on whether to have a by-election to fill former councillor Chris Zanetti’s seat. Former mayor Hugh Mackenzie says it’s too expensive.

Zanetti represented Stisted, Stevenson and Port Syndey Wards. He stepped down for personal reasons in January. Mackenzie says council should appoint a new councillor instead to save tax payers money.

Mackenzie says during the election about 1,500 people voted in those wards. However, if council choose to have a by-election the numbers would be reduced.

Huntsville council is expecting to hear a few deputations at tonight’s regular meeting. This includes the Ontario Watercross event in June. Council is expected to vote a noise by-law exemption for the event. There will be speakers to talk about a Cancer Research event with Robin’s Rebels and New Vision Unlimited will present to council as well.

Town staff will be reporting on budget expenses that were excluded from this year’s budget, the economic development working group and the Huntsville/Lake of Bays Chamber of Commerce will be looking for an amendment to their agreement with the town.

The council meeting starts at 7 p.m.
