Police urging drivers to be cautious with new pedestrian crossing lights on Brunel Road

Huntsville OPP is urging drivers to be cautious on Brunel Road, near Huntsville High School.

According to police, the District of Muskoka installed overhead pedestrian crossing lights at the start of the school year to provide a safer way for students to cross the street.

Police said the crossing lights are at the intersection of Brunel Road and Cora Street and are similar to the ones in the downtown core on Main St East and at West Street.

With the installation of the crossing lights, officers said there is no longer a crossing guard at that location.

Police said even with the new safety measures, drivers and cyclists must continue to be alert and yield to pedestrians crossing or about to cross the road, especially during peak times before/after school and lunch hour.

Under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act, drivers and cyclists must come to a complete stop and proceed until pedestrians and any school crossing guards have safely reached the sidewalk.

Police remind drivers that there are traffic fines and demerit points associated with failing to yield to pedestrians.
